Accurately monitoring degradation mechanisms such as wear can be a challenge.
ALS provides laser scanning services for the modelling of the internal and external surfaces of critical plant and equipment that includes:

- Buckets
Laser scanning builds a 3D picture of component surfaces. When used as a single scan, laser scanning can be utilised to:
- Reverse engineer drawings of plant for which no drawings are currently available.
- Estimate the volume of internal spaces, such as tanks, to confirm their product capacity.
When used over time, or in comparison with as built drawings, laser scanning can provide:
- Assessment of the rate at which wear / degradation is occurring.
from which ALS staff can estimate the expected remaining life of the wearing components.

Beyond the benefits of direct measurement, ALS laser scanning commonly provides efficiency gains and safety benefits. For example:
- Use of laser scanning for internal measurements normally minimises confined space entry requirements.
- Laser scanning is very high productivity, allowing a number of wearing surfaces of interest (e.g. wearing surfaces) to be scanned simultaneously.
