In today’s challenging horizontal wells, lateral lengths are continually pushing the realm of possibility, going deeper and farther than ever before, and with it new challenges present themselves. The industry’s best motors have their limitations with flow rates, which limits the up-hole velocity and turbulence that is so important for proper hole-cleaning, especially when the BHA is way out at the end of the long horizontal sections. With the increasing of lateral depths, this translates into more formation zones and thus more plug/ seat & ball debris and friction issues created from the subsequent milling, costing Well Operators time and money.
ALS has designed the PACS Tool to meet this challenge. The Pressure-Activated Circulating Sub gives the operator the flexibility to divert the flow path inside the work string to the annulus, and then cycle back through the BHA again, repeating as often as required without the use of drop-balls, simply by shutting down/ starting up the fluid pump. The isolation of the tools below when activated, allows the fluid pump to increase its’ rate beyond the parameters of the motor. Pressure change observed on surface indicates the cycle has taken place.
This significant increase in fluid volume will not only clean the wellbore, but will allow milling operations to resume without the need to trip to surface to redress the circulating sub, as in the case with traditional drop-ball circulating subs, saving Well Operators time and money. And in the event the BHA is hung up while pulling & out of hole with the PACS Tool cycled to the annuls, the PACS can easily be cycled back to the motor to assist in freeing up the work string, then isolated again to resume high flow rate circulating.
Typical circulating subs are singularly ball-drop-operated, with some circulating subs on the market that will accommodate multiple drop-balls, or extensions to house even more balls, which only adds to an already lengthy milling BHA. The Infinite-Sequencing feature of the PACS tool without the use of drop-balls sets it apart from its competitors.
