Shear Plate Information
Once the core is brought to surface, careful processing will preserve the quality of the core and allow it to be prepared for analysis.
The shear plate is the first device which must cut the core into sections which will allow the core to be moved out of the derrick itself. The core is cut at each joint of the Inner Barrel Assembly, whether its conventional Inner Barrels or the Thin Sleeve System.
The ALS shear plate mechanism is designed to operate easily and safely while maintaining the integrity of the core. The shear plate operates on a guillotine principle with the blade slowly advancing through the core itself. The drive mechanism is achieved with a mechanical screw or a hydraulic piston. As it closes, the blade supports the core and does not allow it to fall.
The shear plate is purposely designed to clamp on to the Inner barrel. Support is provided to the Inner barrels to act as a backup as the blade shears the core. Once the cut is complete, the shear plate protects the core from slipping out of
