ALS Metallurgy has recently added a standard Shatter Index Test to its iron ore competency testwork capability. The Shatter Index Test is used in the iron ore industry for ore characterisation in particular to understand the friability of lump material which might experience breakages due to product handling. The complete test requires two duplicate 20kg portions of -50+10mm material which are dropped four times from a height of 2 metres onto a 10mm thick metal plate. The percentage of +10mm material remaining from duplicate tests, on the same sample, is averaged and is termed the Shatter Index.
