Targeted analysis of WEEE treatment outputs and recovered material fractions

Reliable analytical data is an important part of responsible WEEE treatment and recycling. It supports the assessment of depollution performance, the quality control of recovered materials and the documentation required by customers, auditors and certification schemes.

ALS provides analytical services for companies involved in the treatment and recycling of electrical and electronic waste, including operators preparing for or undergoing compliance and certification audits. Our laboratory portfolio covers key output fractions from mechanical treatment, refrigeration equipment processing, lamp treatment and material recovery.

Analytical services for WEEE treatment

Our portfolio includes the following groups of analyses:

Refrigerants and oil fractions

  • Residual refrigerants – volatile fluorocarbons and volatile hydrocarbons (VFC/VHC) – in oil

  • Chemical composition of output refrigerants from step 1 treatment

  • Chemical composition of output refrigerants from step 2 treatment

These analyses can support the monitoring of refrigerant recovery and the evaluation of treatment performance at different stages of the process.

Polyurethane fractions

  • Residual VFC and VHC in polyurethane fractions

  • Foreign matter content in polyurethane fractions

Testing polyurethane fractions can provide information about the effectiveness of refrigerant removal and the quality of the separated output material.

Non-metallic and shredded mixed fractions

  • PCB in the physically smallest non-metallic mechanical treatment fraction

  • Cadmium in the physically smallest non-metallic mechanical treatment fraction

  • Mercury in the physically smallest shredded mixed fraction

These analyses support the assessment of hazardous substances that may remain concentrated in fine or mixed output fractions after mechanical treatment.

Plastic fractions

  • Bromine in plastic fractions

  • Restricted brominated substances (BDEs) in plastic fractions

Testing for bromine and restricted brominated substances can assist with the evaluation and appropriate downstream management of plastics recovered from WEEE.

Glass fractions

  • Sulphur in glass fractions

  • PbO in glass fractions

  • Lead in PVP glass fractions

  • Cadmium in glass fractions

  • Selenium in glass fractions

Our services cover selected parameters relevant to the characterisation and quality control of glass fractions generated during WEEE treatment.

Lamp treatment fractions

  • Mercury in glass fractions from lamp treatment

  • Mercury in metal and mixed metal-plastic fractions from lamp treatment

Mercury analysis provides essential information for verifying treatment performance and assessing the resulting lamp treatment fractions.

Methods tailored to the material and purpose

Depending on the matrix and analytical objective, ALS uses suitable chromatographic and spectrometric techniques, including:

GC-MS   |   GC-ECD   |   GC-HRMS   |   ICP-MS   |   ICP-OES

The appropriate analytical scope may vary according to the type of WEEE, the treatment process, the output fraction and the intended use of the results. Detailed information on individual analytes, methods, reporting limits, sample requirements and available analytical packages is therefore provided on request.

Analytical support for WEEE treatment across Europe

ALS supports WEEE treatment operators across Europe with analytical services tailored to their specific requirements. Our specialists can help you define the right testing scope, coordinate sample submission, and select an analytical approach that provides the data you need to assess and optimize your process.
