IANZ accredited inspection services

Independent assurance, technical excellence and trusted results

ALS is proud to operate as an IANZ-accredited ISO/IEC 17020 Inspection Body for both asbestos and methamphetamine inspection services in New Zealand. Accreditation provides independent verification of our technical competence, quality management systems, inspection methodologies and commitment to impartiality. It demonstrates that our inspection services have been assessed against internationally recognised standards and are subject to ongoing surveillance and review.

For our clients, accreditation offers confidence that inspections are being completed consistently, competently and in accordance with established quality processes. As an existing IANZ-accredited inspection body, ALS has successfully extended the accreditation of our Environmental Risk Services in New Zealand to include asbestos inspection services, further strengthening our commitment to quality, technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Understanding our accreditation – FAQs

  • What is ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation?

ISO/IEC 17020 is an internationally recognised standard for organisations that perform inspection activities. Accreditation demonstrates that an inspection body has been independently assessed and found competent to carry out specific inspection services in accordance with documented procedures, quality management systems, and internationally recognised requirements.

  • What is IANZ?

International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) is New Zealand's national accreditation body. IANZ independently assesses organisations against internationally recognised standards to verify technical competence, quality systems, and ongoing compliance with accreditation requirements.

  • What does it mean to be IANZ accredited?

Being IANZ accredited means an organisation has undergone a rigorous independent assessment of its people, processes, systems, and technical capabilities. Accredited organisations are also subject to ongoing surveillance and reassessment to ensure standards continue to be maintained.

  • What services are covered by ALS Environmental Risk Services NZ's accreditation?

Our ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation covers asbestos and methamphetamine inspection services, including:

    • Asbestos Management, Refurbishment and Demolition Surveys
    • Asbestos Air Monitoring and Clearances
    • Methamphetamine Testing

Please refer to our official Scope of Accreditation for the full list of accredited activities.

  • Why should I choose an accredited inspection provider?

Accreditation provides confidence that inspections are completed by competent personnel using documented methodologies, quality controls, and independently assessed systems. It reduces risk and provides greater assurance that inspection outcomes are reliable, consistent, and defensible.

  • Is accreditation required for asbestos surveys?

Not all asbestos surveys in New Zealand are required to be completed by an accredited inspection body. However, accreditation provides independent assurance of technical competence and quality management and is increasingly reconised as best practice by many organisations and procurement teams.

  • What is the difference between accreditation and asbestos licensing?

Accreditation and licensing serve different purposes.
Accreditation assesses the competence of an organisation and its inspection systems against an international standard.
Licensing is issued to individuals and organisations under New Zealand health and safety legislation and authorises specific asbestos-related activities.
ALS Environmental Risk Services NZ maintains both accredited inspection services and appropriately qualified and licensed personnel where required.

  • How often is accreditation assessed?

Accredited organisations are subject to regular surveillance assessments and periodic reassessments by IANZ. Accreditation is not a one-time approval and requires ongoing demonstration of competence and compliance.

  • Does accreditation guarantee better results?

Accreditation does not guarantee a particular inspection outcome. However, it provides assurance that inspections are completed using independently assessed systems, competent personnel, and recognised quality processes designed to deliver accurate and consistent results.

  • What are the benefits of using an accredited provider for large property portfolios?

For organisations managing multiple sites, accreditation provides consistency across inspections, standardised reporting, documented quality controls, and confidence that inspection activities are being undertaken in accordance with recognised standards.

  • Are your surveyors and inspectors qualified?

Yes. Our inspection personnel undertake industry training, competency assessments, ongoing professional development, and technical review processes. Competence is regularly assessed as part of our accredited quality management system.

  • Can I obtain a copy of your accreditation certificate?

Yes. Copies of our current accreditation certificate and scope of accreditation are available upon request and can be downloaded from this page.

  • Does accreditation apply nationwide?

Yes. ALS Environmental Risk Services NZ operates nationally and delivers accredited inspection services throughout New Zealand under a consistent quality management system.

  • How does accreditation benefit procurement teams?

Accreditation provides independent evidence of technical competence and quality assurance, helping procurement teams evaluate suppliers and demonstrate due diligence when selecting inspection providers.

  • What is the difference between an asbestos survey and an asbestos management plan?

An asbestos survey identifies and assesses asbestos-containing materials within a building. An asbestos management plan uses the survey findings to document how asbestos risks will be managed and controlled over time.

  • How can I verify your accreditation?

Current accreditation details can be verified through IANZ and by reviewing our accreditation certificate and scope of accreditation documents.
