Asbestos registers and management plans

Regulatory requirements

Under the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, any workplace where asbestos or asbestos-containing material (ACM) is identified or likely to be present must have both an asbestos register and an asbestos management plan prepared and maintained.

This applies to all buildings constructed before 31 December 2003, as these are considered likely to contain asbestos unless proven otherwise.

  • The asbestos register is a record of all identified or assumed asbestos, including location, type and condition.
  • The asbestos management plan is a broader document that explains how the risks identified in the register will be managed – including procedures, responsibilities and training.

Both must be kept up to date, made readily accessible to workers and contractors, and reviewed at least every five years or when circumstances change.
