Understanding mould contamination

Mould and bacteria pose significant impacts to human health, causing symptoms ranging from allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and, in some cases, mild to life threatening infections. Certain mould species produce mycotoxins, which are toxic to humans.

Other species of moulds and bacteria contain allergens that have the potential of triggering reactions.

Health risks can vary – with contributing factors including:

  • Types and levels of mould or bacteria present
  • Their growth stage,
  • Method of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, skin contact)
  • Individual susceptibility.

Indoor mould growth is strongly correlated to high levels of moisture. Effective remediation strategies requires locating and addressing the source of moisture. Mould can grow almost anywhere, including concealed locations such as wall or ceiling cavities, behind wallpaper, or in subfloor spaces. Even non-visible mould can negatively impact health.

Our mould assessment services

At ALS, our Environmental Risk Services team offers a comprehensive range of mould assessment services, tailored to meet the needs of both residential and commercial clients.

Inspections and sampling:
  • Visual inspections to identify visible mould, water damage and areas at risk
  • Moisture assessments using meters and thermal imaging to detect hidden dampness
  • Air and surface sampling for National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) laboratory analysis to determine the type and concentration of mould present.
Remedial action plans:
  • Investigation to identify the underlying causes of mould, such as leaks or poor ventilation
  • Development of clear, actionable remediation plans aligned with guidelines and standards
  • Recommendations for moisture control, ventilation improvements and safe removal methods.
Post-remediation validation:
  • Clearance inspections following mould removal to help ensure successful remediation
  • Verification sampling and reporting to confirm effective mould removal and safe re-occupation.
