Due to enactment of international conventions and national directives, many environmental authorities have developed specific dredged material guidelines and/or specific legislation for sediments. Specific guidelines exist for decontamination, re-use or disposal of sediment.
Assessing levels of contaminants in biota provides complementary information to the testing of sediments in isolation. The levels found in biota are the bioavailable fraction as certain contaminants travel through the food chain and can affect humans via bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the ecosystem.
ALS has an advanced range of capabilities to support sediment and biota programs for the assessment of contamination, to fulfil the most stringent regulatory requirements.
