Why professional testing matters

Methamphetamine contamination in homes poses serious health risks and often can’t be detected by sight or smell alone. Professional testing is the only reliable way to uncover hidden contamination before purchasing a property, helping you avoid unexpected and costly remediation after you’ve moved in.

When to test:

  • Before buying a home – to avoid inheriting hidden contamination and the high costs of cleanup.
  • When renting out or moving into a rental property – to protect both tenants and landlords from liability and health risks.
  • After suspicious activity – such as unusual chemical odors, excessive security measures, or heavy traffic to and from a property.
  • If children, elderly, or people with health issues will live in the home – since they are especially vulnerable to contamination.
  • When remodeling or tearing out walls/floors – hidden contamination can spread once materials are disturbed.

FAQs

  • What is methamphetamine surface wipe sampling?
Meth surface sampling involves using a methanol-wetted wipe or gauze inside a 100 cm² template area to collect potential contamination. The wipe is analyzed in a laboratory using NIOSH Method 9111 (LC/MS) to determine methamphetamine residue levels.
  • What surfaces should be tested?
    • Cold air returns
    • Furnace cold air plenums
    • Heat vents
    • Bathroom vents
    • Walls and other suspected surfaces

  • How much contamination can be detected?
The laboratory reporting limit is 0.1 µg per sample. This helps ensure even small amounts of meth contamination can be identified.
  • How are results interpreted?
    • The total methamphetamine mass recovered on each wipe sample is reported by the laboratory.
    • When a single wipe is used to sample multiple discrete areas, the total result is divided by the number of areas sampled to determine an average result per area.
    • Results are then normalized to a 100 cm² surface area, which is the standard basis used by most state and local regulatory agencies when establishing methamphetamine cleanup criteria.
    • The adjusted, area-normalized result (µg/100 cm²) is compared directly to the applicable regulatory cleanup limits to determine compliance.
  • What materials and equipment are used?
    • Methanol-wetted wipes (or GhostWipes™)
    • A 100 cm² template
    • Collection tubes
    • Gloves
    • Chain of Custody (COC) form for the lab.
  • How do I submit samples to the lab?
    1. Place the wipe into the collection tube.
    2. Label with sample ID, date and location.
    3. Complete the chain-of-custody form.
    4. Deliver or ship samples to:
