Isocyanate exposure has been identified as a health hazard for both humans and animals.
When isocyanates evaporate into the air, through a variety of work activities, they can become irritants to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Some symptoms of isocyanate exposure include sore eyes and throat, coughing, asthma, and chest tightness.
Isocyanates are used in the production of polyurethane and some pesticides. They are also a common starting component in the synthesis and use of the following materials:
- Flexible foams
- Rigid foams
- Synthetic rubbers
- Paints
- Varnishes
- Lacquers
- Adhesives
These materials have been used in both residential and commercial building construction projects over the years. The EPA, OSHA, and the Occupational Heath and Safety regulatory body in Canada have encouraged manufacturers to try to find a suitable alternative to using isocyanates in the various manufacturing industries. However, they are still commonly used today.
ALS provides both the media and analysis required for a variety of isocyanates.
