- Introductory overview regarding Legionella Monitoring:
- - risks in warm water systems
- verification monitoring only - to make sure that the controls you have put in place from the Water Management Plans are working
- - risks in warm water systems
- General sampling considerations: such as what is a sample, the purpose, importance, safety, etc.
- General sampling techniques: including aseptic protocols, sampling for chemical analysis, field tests, as well as practical demonstrations.
- Legionella specific sampling techniques: including the difference between a first-flush sample and second sample after flushing for a period, the benefits/purpose of each, as well as practical demonstrations.
- Sample integrity: guidance on specific bottle types, sample temperature during storage and transport to the laboratory, sample holding times and the requirement to analyse within these to ensure an accurate result, the purpose and importance of the Chain of Custody (COC) when submitting a sample to the Laboratory.
- Stakeholder consideration and management: access protocols, sensitivities around patients and processes in hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Update on current test methods: overview, and the recommended use of each type including:
- An overview of the update to the Australian Standard for Legionella analysis AS3896 and how this will affect reporting requirements
- An overview of the ‘low-level’ ISO Legionella analysis method
- An introduction to MALDI-TOF technology and the ability to shorten analysis times using this method of confirmation
- Fit for purpose on which analysis method to use – cooling towers vs. Healthcare
- How to interpret results: what to do if you get a ‘positive’ Legionella test.
