Inorganic analysis of stack emissions is typically directed towards compounds that can contribute to acid rain like nitrogen and sulphur dioxide.

SULPHUR DIOXIDE EMISSIONS FROM STATIONARY SOURCES – EPA Methods 6, 8 and CTM-013

Method 6 is for SO2 while Method 8 and CTM-013 provide speciated determination of SO2 and SO3 (i.e. H2SO4)

SO3 (or H2SO4) emissions are captured either by impingement through 80% IPA (method 6 and 8) or by condensation (CTM-013). SO2 is captured and converted into sulphate by reaction with aqueous hydrogen peroxide in impingers. SO2 and SO3 are assayed as sulphate either by IC or by barium-thorin titration.


AMMONIA FROM STATIONERY SOURCES

Air samples are collected using a solution impinger of sulfuric acid. Samples are analysed by photometry after distillation.

Note: Impinger solution volumes are recorded prior to analysis and are included on the ALS report to enable concentrations to be calculated as mg of analyte per m3.


OXIDES OF NITROGEN (NOx) FROM STATIONERY SOURCES – EPA Methods 7A & 7D

Oxides of nitrogen are captured in oxidizing impinger reagents and converted to nitrate. Total NOx is assayed by the determination of nitrate by IC.
